Pixel Worlds fish values: all 12 species compared

What every fish is worth, the pattern behind it, and the three species that ignore the pattern.

Twelve species, five sizes each, sixty prices. The fish table is tidier than the gemstone one in places and messier in others, and the messy parts are where players lose money. Here it is.

Gems paid per fish, by species and size.

The pattern, and the three exceptions

Nine of the twelve follow one rule:

price = tiny value × size factor

size factor: Tiny 1 Small 4 Medium 7 Large 10 Huge 30

That's a lot steeper than the gemstone ladder at the bottom end. A small fish pays 4× a tiny one, where a small gemstone only pays 2×. Fish start rewarding size sooner.

Three species ignore it, and you'll want to memorise which, because the pattern will mislead you otherwise:

  • Goldfish and butterflyfish both pay 600 for a huge rather than the 450 the ladder predicts. That's a 40× jump instead of 30×. Both are quietly better than they look.
  • Dumb fish follows nothing at all: 5, 10, 30, 50, 100, which works out as 1×, 2×, 6×, 10×, 20×. It's the cheapest fish in the game at every size, and a huge one pays less than most species' medium.

These are real game values, not transcription slips. They've been checked, and the calculator carries a test that pins those three rows so nobody later "corrects" them into the pattern.

Crab is in its own league

Crab barely belongs on the same table as the other eleven. A tiny crab pays 320 gems. That beats a huge herring, a huge kingfish and a huge dumb fish, and it's four times the next best tiny, acid puffer at 80. A huge crab pays 9,600 gems.

For scale, the best gemstone in the game is a huge diamond at 900 gems. One huge crab beats ten of them. If you're holding crab, you're holding the densest value anywhere on this site.

Ranking by tiny value

Every species scales from its tiny value, so ranking the tinies ranks everything. Best to worst: crab (320), acid puffer (80), tuna (40), sea angler and piranha (30), carp and halibut (20), goldfish and butterflyfish (15), herring and kingfish (10), dumb fish (5).

Several species are priced identically to each other. If someone tries to tell you one half of a matched pair is worth more, it isn't.

Fish against gemstones

One of every fish, all sixty items, comes to 31,175 gems. One of every gemstone, all twenty-five, comes to 3,196. Per item fish carry a lot more value, though there are more than twice as many fish items, and none of this says anything about how hard each is to come by.

The comparison that matters is per item sitting in your inventory right now. On that measure a huge crab beats everything, a huge acid puffer (2,400) beats every gemstone in the game, and a tiny dumb fish (5) is worth less than a tiny emerald.

Worked examples

A good haul. 5 tiny herring, 3 small herring, 2 medium herring and 1,111 large herring: (5×10) + (3×40) + (2×70) + (1,111×100) = 50 + 120 + 140 + 111,100 = 111,410 gems. At 10 gems per byte coin, 11,141 coins.

Is this trade fair? Someone offers 40 large tuna for your 2 huge crab. Theirs: 40 × 400 = 16,000. Yours: 2 × 9,600 = 19,200. You're 3,200 gems down. Ask for 48 large tuna and you're level.

The dumb fish trap. 200 huge dumb fish sounds like a serious haul. It's 200 × 100 = 20,000 gems, barely more than two huge crab. The word "huge" means nothing without the species attached to it.

What each size step is actually worth

The ladder multiplies, so the gaps between sizes widen fast as you climb. On a standard species, tiny to small quadruples the value (1→4). Small to medium adds less than double (4→7). Medium to large adds less still (7→10). Then large to huge triples it (10→30).

The two big jumps sit at the bottom and the top, and the middle three sizes are bunched closer together than people assume. A medium fish is only 1.75× a small one. Sorting a catch in a hurry? Split it huge, large, everything else.

Take tuna as an example: 40, 160, 280, 400, 1,200. One huge is worth three larges, or thirty tinies. A single huge tuna beats a stack of twenty-nine tiny ones.

Matched pairs, and why it matters

Four pairs are priced identically at every size: herring and kingfish, carp and halibut, goldfish and butterflyfish, sea angler and piranha. Eight of the twelve species are one half of a matched pair.

Names carry a lot of perceived value that the price table doesn't back up. A sea angler sounds far more impressive than a piranha. They pay the same. Any time a trade is priced on the strength of a name, go and check the table.

What this guide does not tell you

Same caveat as the gemstone guide: this covers value, not rarity. We have no reliable figures for how often each species is caught, so don't read any of it as advice on what to fish for. Crab being worth 64× a dumb fish tells you what to keep, not what to chase.

The gemstone side is covered in the gemstone value guide. For how gems turn into byte coins, see how gems work.
